red cupTim hung out in the corner of the frat house. He held his red cup, taking a swig every now and then. No one could tell it was soda and not beer. How did he get here?

Besides my writing prompts, I’ve not done a lot of writing in the last two months. Ironic isn’t it that I’m prompting others every week. What I have done is get lost in some really great books.  Tonight I finished the last one in the stack.

I have ideas for plot and blogs, but when I go to write, the words, the tone and cadance don’t come. Flat — empty — nada. It’s August, if I don’t get on it, I’m not going to come close to my annual word count goal.

So, while there are too many books to read and so little time, I declare tonight that I am not going to start another new book for one month — September 20th. And I’m going to write something everyday — even if it’s only glub, glub on a page. Words are going to flow. They may not be pretty. They may not be smooth, but there will be words on a page.

Are you with me?

collegeDawn’s life could be packed into ten milk crates, a footlocker and a laundry basket. Not much but it was a start. Although her three best friends planned to live in an apartment, Dawn chose the dorm. It was easier and easy is what she needed given her courses the first semester.

brazilRosa slowly unpacked from spending the summer with her grandmother in Brazil. Leaving two months ago she was a typical teenager with her earbuds and phone not far from her head. Her seventy-five year old grandmother turned out to be more than the dreaded relative she was being forced to spend the summer with. Rosa came home a young lady full of appreciation for where her family had come from.  While she was being transformed, her family at home was changing. Rosa worried that there would be no way to reconcile the two very different changes.

air-travelMandy stood at the luggage counter trying to get the lady’s attention. She did everything short of yelling, “hey lady.” The flight was long and bumpy. Now her luggage wasn’t to be found at baggage claim. Rex walked up to the counter with his brown wavy hair and standing just over six foot tall. He cleared his voice and the chick behind the counter hung up the phone to attend to him. Mandy was about ready to explode when Rex spoke, “Yes mam, it seems our luggage didn’t make it and we need to have you look into it. This lady was here before me.” He’d done this before and had the looks to get the attention. His manners were groomed well enough for him to let Mandy go first. Surprising.

skiTraditionally, Christmas was spent in their mid-west home, with family coming over Christmas Eve for gift exchange, food and fun. Marv always made sure the lights were on the house the week after Thanksgiving. This year Wanda decided to take the kids on a ski vacation.  Flying into Boulder, Colorado, the sun was out and the snow was fresh. New traditions – that’s what the kids needed. Christmas with skiing, hot tubs and fires in their mountain bungalow would give them a fresh start. The first night, the kids were settled and Wanda sat by the fire with a glass of wine. The day had been filled with laughter and fun. But the quiet brought shadows and all she wanted to do was cry.

hikeJeff hiked ten miles and felt no closer to Barb. He had to get to her and felt like with every step he was getting further away. He was making progress, but not fast enough. The terrain prevented any speed, so every step counted and every turn had to be right. There was no room for delays. When he got to her, the first thing he would do, is apologize for this crazy vacation idea. Just as the team took a water break, his radio came to life.

Beach-vacationCarol didn’t even hear notice the tide had come all the way in to her beach chair. The creeping water startled her when it rushed her toes. Too many thoughts, her brain couldn’t relax and just enjoy the crystal blue ocean waters. Her thoughts were bouncing around like the pelican diving and taking off from the water. Still no dinner. After three days at the beach, why did she feel no more relaxed?
