air-travelMandy stood at the luggage counter trying to get the lady’s attention. She did everything short of yelling, “hey lady.” The flight was long and bumpy. Now her luggage wasn’t to be found at baggage claim. Rex walked up to the counter with his brown wavy hair and standing just over six foot tall. He cleared his voice and the chick behind the counter hung up the phone to attend to him. Mandy was about ready to explode when Rex spoke, “Yes mam, it seems our luggage didn’t make it and we need to have you look into it. This lady was here before me.” He’d done this before and had the looks to get the attention. His manners were groomed well enough for him to let Mandy go first. Surprising.

skiTraditionally, Christmas was spent in their mid-west home, with family coming over Christmas Eve for gift exchange, food and fun. Marv always made sure the lights were on the house the week after Thanksgiving. This year Wanda decided to take the kids on a ski vacation.  Flying into Boulder, Colorado, the sun was out and the snow was fresh. New traditions – that’s what the kids needed. Christmas with skiing, hot tubs and fires in their mountain bungalow would give them a fresh start. The first night, the kids were settled and Wanda sat by the fire with a glass of wine. The day had been filled with laughter and fun. But the quiet brought shadows and all she wanted to do was cry.

hikeJeff hiked ten miles and felt no closer to Barb. He had to get to her and felt like with every step he was getting further away. He was making progress, but not fast enough. The terrain prevented any speed, so every step counted and every turn had to be right. There was no room for delays. When he got to her, the first thing he would do, is apologize for this crazy vacation idea. Just as the team took a water break, his radio came to life.

Beach-vacationCarol didn’t even hear notice the tide had come all the way in to her beach chair. The creeping water startled her when it rushed her toes. Too many thoughts, her brain couldn’t relax and just enjoy the crystal blue ocean waters. Her thoughts were bouncing around like the pelican diving and taking off from the water. Still no dinner. After three days at the beach, why did she feel no more relaxed?

dead-flowers-1Although the flowers she received the morning of his arrival had died, Martha rolled over to find her prince charming right where he belonged. Her heart sang with joy in anticipation of their future. The past eight months were shoved into her memory not to be relived.

Monica changed her route. The playground was too difficult; too sad. She relived the tragic day over and over. It was exhausting.  Tim was a help, but he didn’t understand.k2-Child-playground

girl wantsAs an author working on completing my first novel I have been reading first or early novels of other authors in the same genre. This exercise has allowed me to experience other authors, some of which are now widely read, in the early state of their craft. This exercise has been encouraging to me in my own writing. I have learned more about showing not telling and I’ve seen that in some situations the first novels can be pretty rough. Nonetheless, I admire these authors for foraging the way for those of us just getting started. Other lessons I’ve learned are how to write a character and working in subplots. Thorn-in-My-Heart

The authors I have read include, Kristin Billerbeck, Victoria Bylin, Betty Thomason Owens, JoAnn Durgin, Francine Rivers, Lynn Austin, Liz Curtis Higgs, Ann Gabhart, Julie Lessman and Susan Gloss. Many of these authors are considered to be faith-based or Christian. I assure you their stories are just as intriguing as secular authors in the same genre. Romance doesn’t need to be completely shown for the innuendo to be felt by the reader. Comedy book-prelude-largedoesn’t have to be someone’s expense to be hilarious. Greed and selfishness don’t have to fall into Gordon Gekko style to create intrigue.

Choose one of these or your favorite author or genre and look up their first published book. Read it and see what you think. Let me know.
